Favorite Fiction
Inspirations, Influences, Recommendations
Some of these have been favorites since college. My tastes may have changed, but it would feel disloyal to drop any of them from the list.
In addition to the books pictured at right, here are a few more favorites:
- Any page of Kafka
- The last 3 pages of Joyce’s “The Dead,” the first page of Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and random pages from Ulysses
- The 50-page Prologue of Don DeLillo’s Underworld
- Any story by Stephen Dixon
- Any story by Damon Runyon
- A Good Man is Hard to Find, stories by Flannery O’Connor
- What Is the What, by Dave Eggers
- The Devil’s Dictionary, by Ambrose Bierce [not fiction, but a favorite]
- Foreign Objects, by David Reisman [again, not fiction, but a favorite]
